How We Test Online Casinos
Many review sites write about casinos from press releases. We do not. Every casino we cover has been through a hands-on test: a real account, a real deposit, real play, a real bonus and a real withdrawal request. A full test runs three to ten business days. Here is exactly what we do at each stage.
Stage 1 - Pre-checks
Before signing up, we research the casino. We check what licence it holds and its current status, and for the Australian context we note that online casino games are prohibited for operators to offer here and check the ACMA position at acma.gov.au. We look into the operator behind the brand, its country of registration and its other sites. We scan complaint history on AskGamblers, Casino Guru and Trustpilot for patterns. We confirm the site uses SSL, and we read the terms for unfair clauses such as winning confiscation, unrealistic wagering or hidden caps. A failed licence check or a history of confiscations can end the test here.
Stage 2 - Registration
We sign up as an ordinary player, with no VIP treatment. We time how long registration takes and note how many fields are required and how clear the flow is. We go through KYC verification to see what documents are requested and how long approval takes. We check whether the welcome bonus activates automatically or needs a code, and whether its terms are visible before you opt in. Our benchmark: registration under five minutes, verification within 48 hours, and bonus terms available before activation.
Stage 3 - Deposit
We make a real deposit, usually AU$20 to AU$50, across two or three methods from different categories - card, crypto and an Australian option such as PayID. For each we record the minimum, the crediting time and any fee. We confirm the balance updates correctly and that any currency handling works. Our benchmark: instant crediting, no deposit fees, a low minimum (around AU$10 to AU$20) and the methods Australians actually use.
Stage 4 - Bonuses
We claim the welcome bonus and pull its terms apart: the wagering multiplier, whether it applies to the bonus alone or bonus plus deposit, the max bet allowed during play, and the game weightings (pokies usually 100%, table games far less, live often excluded). We work out the real cost - a AU$100 bonus at 35x means about AU$3,500 of turnover before anything converts. We check the expiry window and any caps on winnings or withdrawals from the bonus. Our benchmark: fair wagering at or below 35x on the bonus, at least a 7-day clock, a workable max bet and no buried restrictions.
Stage 5 - Gameplay
We play across three categories: pokies, table games and live casino. We assess catalogue size, the spread of providers and whether the big studios (Evolution, Pragmatic Play, Hacksaw, BGaming and others) are present. We check load speed, stability and stream quality on live tables. Our benchmark: a deep catalogue from multiple reputable providers, a working live floor, and smooth performance on both desktop and mobile.
Stage 6 - Withdrawal
This is the stage that exposes weak casinos, so we treat it as the most important. We request a payout and time it from request to money received, separating the casino's pending period from the payment-rail time. We note any extra verification, new document requests or fresh restrictions at cash-out, plus any fees, the minimum and maximum, and any weekly cap. We also check for reverse-withdrawal traps that tempt you to undo a payout. Our benchmark: under 24 hours is excellent, up to three business days is fine, beyond five days is a red flag; no fees and a reasonable weekly cap.
Stage 7 - Support
We contact support through every channel - live chat, email and phone if offered. On live chat we measure the wait, confirm whether 24/7 really means 24/7, and judge whether answers are a real person or canned by asking specific product questions about wagering, limits and verification. On email we time the reply and rate how complete it is. We also check whether support is available in English for Australian players. Our benchmark: live chat answering within a few minutes, email within 24 hours, and competent rather than scripted replies.
Stage 8 - Mobile and security
We test every casino on a phone, checking the responsive layout, page and game load speed, navigation and whether the cashier works on mobile. We play at least three games on the handset across categories. On security we confirm SSL, look at the data and privacy handling, and check for account protections such as two-factor authentication. We also confirm the safer-gambling tools are present - deposit limits, self-exclusion and reality checks (see Responsible Gambling). Our benchmark: full mobile functionality, SSL throughout and working responsible-gambling tools.
After the test
When testing is done, the reviewer assigns a score using our weighted system (see How We Rate), the review is fact-checked under our Editorial Policy and published with a date. We re-test every three to six months, or sooner if something material changes, and if a casino has clearly worsened we revise the score and warn readers.
